After having a model last week, I was struck by how inaccurate my imagination was. I had begun to create a life size figure sculpture in a particular pose that carried my idea. When I called upon a model to take this pose, I truly was astounded at the bold inaccuracies that plagued my sculpture. I realize that accuracy does not have to be the goal, but this is a challenge that I give myself as I create these figures. The use of a model can ignite the imagination and really push the idea even further. As the model takes the pose and then interprets it she adds to the experience of the process of sculpting as well as the idea of the sculpture for me. I set aside the life size sculpture and worked on a maquette of the pose instead. I am pleased with the results, but have learned how a model can change how I see my own work.
